Summer Expedition - Backpacking/Trail Maintenance

Summer Break 2020 - Backpacking and Trail Maintenance

Trip Status:
Lottery is now open!  Applications will not be accepted after March 5th.

Date:
Monday, June 15th through Thursday, June 19th, 2020

Ages:  Rising 6th through 12th graders (who just graduated).  Space is limited.  Priority will be given to students who were wait-listed for previous expeditions.

Chaperones:  Ms. Morgan Baker (MS DT), Ms. Jasmine Brooks (HS Science)

Expedition Description:
We are teaming up with the Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation to provide an amazingly unique experience for Sage students!  We will be backpacking into the wilderness to enjoy 5 days/4 nights in the backcountry, with our main goal to help the foundation do trail maintenance.  On Monday, we will meet at Sage in the morning, drive in the bus to the trailhead, and backpack in to our backcountry campsite.  For Tuesday through Thursday, a typical day will look like eating breakfast, doing trail work, getting to swim in creeks or lakes, taking day hikes as time permits, and enjoy the peace of the backcountry.  On Friday, we will backpack out and drive back to Sage.

Student Expectations:
This longer expedition will require students to be flexible, willing to put the group before their own needs (at times), and excel with work like cooking, cleaning, and keeping organized.  While some experience in the outdoors will be beneficial, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to tolerate adversity are more important.  Also, the trip will be moderately strenuous.  Students should be in good cardiovascular shape and be ready to backpack with a moderate load at a slow pace for multiple hours.  If a student has not backpacked before, they should spend at least 3 days hiking in the foothills with a pack on to make sure they are up for the challenge.

As a result, students will have a brief sit-down meeting with Mr. Wakild to go over these expectations and make sure the trip is a good fit for them.

Cost:  $150.  While this is not as cheap as was hoped, it is still a great value.  The Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation is assisting with expenses.  Please consider making a donation to them!  Scholarships are always available.  Please read the description on the Sage Expeditions website and then email Eric Wakild at [email protected] to discuss the options.

Time:  Departure times on Monday, June 15th are still being decided by the group.  Expect the early morning.  The hope would be to return by 6pm on Friday, June 19th.

Bring/Wear:
Mid-June weather in the Idaho mountains can be unpredictable - expect anything from cold and snow to hot and sunny.  As the winter and spring play out, we will have a better sense of what to expect.  A complete gear and clothing list will be provided, and we will check gear before we leave.  A sturdy pair of boots (that are broken in) are mandatory.  All food will be provided on this trip.

Register:
To enroll, please fill out the Registration Form.  Registrations will not be accepted after March 5th.  Please print and sign the Risk Waiver (You only need to complete this once per year for day/weekend trips).  If your student will be bringing and taking medication on the trip, please complete and turn in this Medication Form.
